You can skip using Cable TV for a richer media environment: Hook a Mac mini 2012 or later to your TV screen.

Small, reasonably priced, and capable of accessing media locally as well as online, the Mac mini has a lot going for it. A visitor barely notices it since it has a small footprint. What you notice: a small keyboard (no need for numeric keypad) and a cordless mouse. The Mac mini comes with a 2.5 GHz Core i5 processor, 4GB or 8GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive. Its HDMI port lets you connect directly to the TV. If you still use DVDs and CDs then you can add a DVD drive for $29.

As an option, you can copy your movies and music onto your hard disk & have a huge media library at your fingertips. And you can use free or low-cost services such as Netflix, Pandora, HBO Go, Hulu, YouTube, and Amazon Instant Video.

Of course, you still have access to your email, browser, applications for a normal computer use. And you can also use AirDrop as well as direct file sharing to connect to your main Mac or your iPhone.
