MacBook chargers come in many varieties:

  • 60W for the MacBook & MacBook Pro 13”
  • 85W for the MacBook Pro 15” & 17”
  • 45W for the MacBook Air

Apple designed them with an original look: white & square. Unlike any other charger or adapter.

They typically last 3 to 5 years if they are well-taken care of. Electric failure is uncommon. However, a large number need to be replaced in less than 2 years, often because of poor handling.

Of course rough use such as dropping, dragging, liquid damage & dog/cat gnawing can wreak havoc & will bring the loyal charger to its knees. Here are some basic rules for avoiding “unnatural” wear & tear:

  1. Do not pull the charger by its wire, on either side.
  2. Do not bend the cable at 90º near the MagSafe connector or near the charger strain-relief plastic jacket. Why? Because the cable is actually made of many thin strands of wire (that’s why it’s so flexible) and the all the back and forth bending ends up breaking them one by one, until finally there is no contact left & the cable acts as a heating element. It literally can burn!
  3. To unplug the MagSafe, simply push gently on it: it will come free right away since it no longer has the magnetic force to keep it plugged. You’ll be really surprised when you try it.
  4. Apple designed these cute rabbit-ears that come unstuck & allow you to wind the cable around them Very convenient as most of you found out. Yet, you must do it right: follow recommendation number 2 & avoid bending the cable at 90º near the strain relief sleeve. Simply let the cable go straight & form a loop before you wind it. It’s quite simple: Just watch the picture.
  5. Keep everything clean, especially the contacts of the MagSafe connector, both on the side of the Charger & the side of the MacBook. If you have any questions or issues, feel free to call us or leave a message on contact@drchipsd.com
